Turkish Language VII - Translation of general texts

[70091 C, 7th Semester, undergraduate studies]

Aims and Objectives

During this semester students are systematically involved in the translation from Turkish (source language) to Greek (target language) and vice versa (straight and reverse translation). Texts to be translated are original texts of general interest (from magazines, newspapers, passages from literary texts and other types of texts). The goal is to remain as close as possible to the original text. The translation has to be rendered in the appropriate style, type of text, and language register of a respective text written in the target language.

To this end, the texts to be translated are morphosyntactically, lexically, semantically, stylistically, and factually analyzed, explaining idioms, metaphores, expressions, proverbs, attitudes, and the worldview of the language community in question. In addition, reference is made to specific historical, political, and social conditions, and to the customs of the Turkish language community in order to fully understand the context of the text to be translated; i.e., the context and events that inspire the author of each text.

Our goal is to teach the student the techniques / strategies of translation, especially between two different language typologies and cultural realities. Translation to and from Turkish is interesting but also difficult because Turkish is an agglutinative language, and, therefore, the sentences’ syntax is quite different from that of Greek and other Indo-European languages. Also, our goal is to enable our students to choose the translation approach that will help them translate the text in the best possible way and solve the puzzle of the Turkish complex and, usually, lengthy sentences. In this way, students will obtain a useful advantage in their future career.

Course outline

The development of course content is in thematic units, covering the thirteen (13) units of the course.

Students will translate authentic texts on a weekly basis. They will present the translation of a text given to them 15 days in advance. The text will then be translated once again in the classroom, where everyone will participate. It will be analyzed in morphosyntactic, lexical, semantic, stylistic, and pragmatic terms, while various translation options will be discussed. The translations will then be corrected, and mistakes will be grouped and analyzed in class, while offering useful comments on the students’ performance.

Sometimes the text will be unknown. If so, its translation will be done in the classroom in order to check the actual translation ability of the students. The use of dictionaries is allowed.

The texts are updated every six months.
